Dazzling. Soft, elegant, glowing. The Orton Effect is a fast way to give your photos a dreamy look. Michael Orton uses this technique with multiple images taken on slide film. Thanks to modern image editing magic, you can get the same watercolor-like appearance with a single image. Even better, it’s a great way to improve slightly out-of-focus shots! The Orton Effect p.s. [...] Give your images the Orton Effect January 25th, 2007 by Lifehacker Web site PCIN.net has a tutorial on modifying photos to achieve the Orton Effect: a lush, watercolor-style glow. You’ll need an image-editing program, of course. The author uses Adobe Photoshop Elements 5, but any program that supports layers should do (so give GIMP a try). Basically, you’re going to create two layers, one that’s sharp, the other slightly out of focus. Then you’re going merge them together. Hell of an easy way to achieve a cool effect that required some serious effort back in the days of film.
