Project 365: How to Take a Photo a Day and See Your Life in a Whole New Way
People will often say that their whole lives flashed before their eyes after they experienced a traumatic event. Perhaps it’s a bit morbid, but we think that sounds pretty incredible.
When Taylor McKnight started taking a photo a day on January 1st, 2004, he never imagined the project would not only serve as a way to remember a year, but also help him understand what was important to him in his life.
Whether it was his relationships, his career, or his fashion sense, recording a photo a day for a whole year left him with a rich visual history of his life. And it made him a better photographer to boot!
Now that he’s in the middle of doing it for a second time, we asked Taylor to write about it for us. Read on for our tutorial on how and why to create your own daily photographic history.
Project 365: How to Create a Daily Photographic History www.photojojo.com/content/tutorials/project-365-take-a-photo-a-day/
Why do it?
Taking a photo a day is a big undertaking with big payoffs. Here are just a few reasons why you should consider doing it:
- Imagine being able to look back at any day of your year and recall what you did, who you met, what you learned… (Often we find it hard to remember what we did just yesterday or even last night, let alone a whole year ago!)
- Your year-long photo album will be an amazing way to document your travels and accomplishments, your haircuts and relationships. Time moves surprisingly fast.
- Taking a photo a day will make you a better photographer. Using your camera every day will help you learn its limits. You will get better at composing your shots, you’ll start to care about lighting, and you’ll become more creative with your photography when you’re forced to come up with something new every single day.
Tips on How to Do It
Here are six tips on how to create your own Project 365:
- Bring Your Camera Everywhere
Yes, everywhere. Get in the habit. Grocery stores, restaurants, parties, work, and school. Going to a movie theatre? Snap a pic of the flick with your phone–there are photo-ops everywhere. If you have one of those tiny tiny cameras, you have no excuse not to have it in your pocket all the time. And if you don’t? Camera phones are a great substitute.
- Make Posting Easy
You can install blog software like Movable Type or WordPress on your own site and create an entry for each photo, but for true ease of use, try a photo sharing site. Flickr will let you post a week’s worth of photos in 2 minutes flat, and fotolog and Photoblog.com are geared toward a photo-a-day workflow. Making it fast and easy means you’re much more likely to do it.
- Vary Your Themes
Try to capture the day’s events in a single photo. Perform photographic experiments. Take a photo of someone new you meet, something you ate for the first time, or something you just learned how to do. Take a photo of something that made you smile. And don’t forget to take a photo of yourself at least once a month so you can remember how you’ve changed, too.
- Tell a Story
Use your blog entry, or your photo description, to explain what’s going on in each day’s photograph. How good did that dinner taste? What made you want to take a photo of that stranger? It’ll help you remember down the road, and it gives friends following along a better appreciation of why you took the photo you did. You don’t need to write a lot, just enough to add some color.
- Don’t Stop, No Matter What
This is perhaps the most important tip of all. You will get tired of taking a photo every single day. Some days, you will consider giving up. Don’t. The end result is worth the effort. Remind yourself why you wanted to do it in first place.
There will be times you’ll think there’s nothing interesting left to take a photo of, and times you’ll think you didn’t do anything exciting enough to take a photo of. There’s always a great photo to be made.
Get out of the house and take a walk. Or stay inside and look around. Take a photo of something important to you. Take a photo of the inside of your house so you can see how your taste has changed over the years. Take a photo of anything, just don’t stop.
N.b. It helps if you’ve told your friends about the project and asked them to follow along. Their encouragement will keep you going!
- Post early, post often
Plan on going through and posting your photos at least once a week so you don’t get backlogged and feel overwhelmed. Ideally, post every day or two. Again, spend the time up front to make sure it’s quick and easy to post. It’ll make all the difference.

[...] What a cool idea, found here, I would really love to take something like this on. Starting tomorrow I’m bringing my camera everywhere. This project has been made easier by the fact that I just purchased myself a new purse that’s actually big enough to hold everything (about time I did that). I’m thinking I’ll set up a separate blog to keep track of it, I might convert our photo blog because we’re really not doing a whole lot with it right now, or I could just start a whole new one because ya know WordPress updates aren’t already a pain in the butt, why not add one more. I’ll look into that tomorrow as it need to get up early for class/work tomorrow and need to get my beauty sleep (too late to start a new project tonight). [...]

[...] Ok, as you guys know I have been unemployed for a while but that is about to end. I have hospital orientation Monday to begin my new job as a security guard (and yes I will have to carry a gun) so I am pretty excited about that. I will be back on third shift for the first time in 2 years. Today was another Saturday and another loss for the Tarheels. This time they were beaten by the University of South Florida out of Tampa(lol…so I’m sure Colleen is cheering). I think I’m one of the few people who doesn’t want to see John Bunting fired but with every loss that seems more and more like a probability. But basketball season is almost here and it looks like the Tarheels are a strong possibility of being the preseason 1 or 2. Now about today. Kind of uneventful but I did meet a new friend (who’s cute and seems nice) so we’ll see where that leads. My friend and I also ate lunch at my favorite restaurant (Hooters) so thats always nice. Ok, I think thats all for tonight but wish me luck because tomorrow my fantasy football team is going up against the league leader but I’m pretty confident. Oh, and to put as many different subjects as possible in one post on my upcoming birthday I will start my year long project of taking a picture a day and I’ll post here daily about that days picture. Good night all. [...]

[...] I’m probably just creating myself one more thing to feel guilty about not doing, but in the interest of improving my photography and being more creative I’m decided to join in with the Project 365 idea. I’ve had my Canon 350D since March this year and I feel I’m only just getting to a point where I’m doing anything other than randomly waving it at things and pressing the button, and I tend to only take photos when I ‘go somewhere to take photos’. Yet a lot of the photography that I really like isn’t of the obvious stuff, so I’m hoping that this might be a way to start looking for pictures in everyday life rather than just when I visit scenic places or am somewhere surrounded by geeks with cameras. [...] One other thing. I noticed a link on del.icio.us about an idea for a photography project that I’m going to try. The suggestion in the article was to take at least one picture a day for 365 days. So I started 4 days ago. The article recommends taking your camera with you every where you go. Or, failing that, at least carry your camera phone. Either way, if you’re successful you’ll hopefully have learned new things about your camera, new things about photography and will definitely get better at finding good shots. It doesn’t sound like a lot of time but even after 4 days, I’m already starting to worry that I’ll miss a day or two here and there. The bigger worry, though, is that I’m not sure yet how to display the photos. [...]

Why not try this by posting daily pictures of your own parish community on your church website? Sure, it’s a big commitment to get a new photo every day for your site—but think about the payoff: an historical record of your parish and an intriguing introduction for prospective parishioners. Find some ambitious seniors or schoolkids who can help daily. You can record not only the holy days and major events where you might typically have a lot of pics, but also the day-to-day activities and special moments that help define your community. [...]

[...] Lifehacker linked to an article on taking one photo every day for a year, and I put it in the sidebar (Recent Web Clips) a while ago. Then, I thought, I could try that too. So, I started, on the 16 of October. I’ve started a photo set on Flickr, and will continue to add photos to that until mid-October next year. The most recent photo I’ve uploaded will appear in the sidebar here too. Who knows? It might be fun. So far, it’s been difficult to pick something to photograph each day, and I imagine that, some days, it will be even harder, but I’ve never shied away from difficult things. [...]

There aren’t any photos up at the moment but starting on November 1st, I will be posting a photo every day. Also, it’s spring here and I feel like that is a good time to start a new habit and grow in a new way. I hope you enjoy seeing my snapshot treasures of these good times. [...]

[...] It’s been suggested to me that I try to do the ‘Photo-A-Day’ thing, since I got a fancy new camera, etc. Well, I’m not going to. Trying to do it daily would be difficult for me, given that most days I’m either at work, at home, or traveling in-between (and taking a lot of pictures at work is not a good idea). I’ve decided to compromise on the project though, and try to take and post a photo every week. My reason for doing the photo-a-week thing, is to make sure I get out and take more pictures, working under the theory that it will make me a better photographer. With that said, I’m going to warn you that I don’t plan to have an exact schedule for the photos, so they may not show up on the same day every week. [...]

[...] I was over at Mikey’s the other day and he was talking about a website which I thought had a wonderful idea. It’s called Project 365 and its all about photography. Take a picture a day for a year, whether it has a theme or not, recording a photo a day for a whole year leaves you with a rich visual history of your life. So I decided I was going to jump on this right away and do it, so starting today, November 4th, 2006, I am going to take a picture a day and we will see how the project came out on November 4th, 2007. I think it’s a great idea. Just the other day I was talking to someone about how fast time seemed to be passing by. I started my new job 8 months ago, and it seems like it was just yesterday. If you stick to this procedure for the entire year, you’ll create an album that documents your year, but you’ll also have vastly improved your photo skills. Most of the projects I ran into on the internet were from people aged twenty something and most of them did not have kids (yet). The document they created therefor in many ways really reflect their personal, social lives. I think it will not be easy to portrait a year for an entire family of 6 (!) But, for sure we’ll give it a try. As of January 1, 2007 you’ll find one picture per day on the 365 project page on this site or, because I will use that brilliant site for uploading the pictures, at Flickr. RSS 2.0 [...]

[...] I am looking forward to 2007. I don’t see it being quite as eventful as 2005, but more importantly I get the sense it won’t be as awful as 2006. The word that stands out the most when I think of the coming year is “Relief.” I think we are all going to take our collective sighs of relief that what seemed to be one hit after another this year has finally ceased. I don’t get the sense of anything very remarkable – good or bad – happening. If anything, I sense it to be a year of peace and content – where many of the struggles and aggravations of 2006 will be sorted out and settled one way or the other. I’ve said before that I don’t make resolutions for the new year. I don’t plan on changing that this year. I do want to try this, though, because it looks fun and if I can stick with it I think it will be interesting to see it develop over time. That isn’t a resolution so much as an idea. Some of my goals from last year were accomplished, and others weren’t – due to lack of interest or resources, or shifting priorities. I have goals for 2007 as well, but they are rather light in terms of goals – at least the tangible kind that I’ve held in the past. I think 2007 will be a good year for me to just Be. Be here. Be open. Be kind. Be daring. Be satisfied. Be less rigid. Be less controlled, and also less controlling. Be more relaxed. Be less anxious. Be willing to try. [...]

[...] 1. Knit my five for Dulaan. So far I have…1 small mitten. 2. Knit a bear for Mother Bear. I have the yarn and the pattern. I just need to get cracking. 3. Finish Sesame. The yarn that I am knitting this with was originally bought for Mariah, back when the pattern first came out. I knit all the way up to the yoke, connected it and knit around a couple of inches before putting it away for awhile. When I took it back out, it just seemed all wrong. I didn’t think it was going to fit, so I ripped it. Then I tried doubling it to make Blackberry from Knitty. This was another bad choice and I knew it as soon as I started. Bulky yarn and a bad shape for me. I got about half of it done. Now I have the back and a front done on Sesame. I need to finish this because I want to be done with this yarn. 4. Knit the Elizabeth Zimmerman fairisle yoke sweater from The Opinionated Knitter. I got the book for Christmas, just got the yarn, have swatched for the body part and will get started shortly. I guess the real resolution is to finish it. 5. One more sweater this year. I may knit more (I hope I will), but my resolution is for one more, bringing my total up to at least 3 for the year with Sesame and the fairisle yoke sweater. It can even be a child’s sweater if I’m feeling cheatery. Then it could go to Dulaan. 6. Design something of my own this year. I don’t care what it is. I have a few ideas I’ve been kicking around, so I’ll see what happens. 7. Project 365 I first found this through Crazy Aunt Purl and I think it’s a great idea. Of course, I was supposed to have started yesterday, but I forgot. Typical. But I think this will be fun and maybe when I’m done I’ll have an excuse to buy a better camera. One that takes the picture when you push the button and not after it’s thought about it for awhile. 8. No jumping into fads with both feet. I’m not actually much of a fad follower. But those Mason-Dixon warshrags–man I love them. Though I’m sick of seeing them. Anyway, I bought the book, then bought like 15 different colors of kitchen cotton. It’s so cheap, after all and I was envisioning full kitchen sets. Yeah, I ‘ve knit one. So no more of that. Moderation. 9. Don’t promise people knitted items. This is a stress I don’t need. From now on, if I want to knit something for someone I’ll make it a surprise when it’s finished and not before. I have somehow managed to agree to knit a friend from work a hat. I don’t want to knit him a hat. Luckily I didn’t agree on a specific time to deliver this stupid hat. 10. Quit feeling like I have to knit pairs of socks. Sometimes I just feel like knitting a sock. I don’t wear them anyway, so who cares? [...]

[...] Photo Booth is cool. I recently bought a new Macbook to replace my old machine (passed away at the age of three-and-a-half years, 6 months past warranty expiry, of a dead logic board), and one new perk is a built-in iSight camera. While I could use it for more “serious” or “useful” things like video chat, the most I’ve gotten out of it so far is playing around with the Photo Booth software, which allows you to take self-portraits with all sorts of crazy effects added in. I’ll post some examples once I see evidence that people still read this blog (with two posts in rapid succession after a month of absence, you’d think I’d get at least one comment …). Heck, I might even try to do a Project 365 type deal where I take pictures every day for year. Though I might want to supplement those Photo Booth pics with someplace outside the house and school. [...] Are you ready for CameraPhone365? I am. I’ve been tinkering with a new photoblog (http://www.mikemunhall.com/cameraphone365/) that integrates very well with flickr. This new photoblog will be dedicate solely to this project. I still have some tweaking to do and I have to clean up the test photos, but I think it will serve me well for the project. My CameraPhone365 project will begin January 1.What is CameraPhone365?Every day, for one full year, take a picture with your cameraphone and post it to your blog.Where did this idea come from? The idea for CameraPhone365 came from two places. I had just finished a blogging project, NaBloPoMo (National blog Posting Month), where you write a post on your blog (not necessarily a photoblog, just a regular blog) every day for the month of November. There was no way that I could actually write every single day, but I knew I couldn’t fail if I could just post a photo from my cameraphone on the days that I didn’t have anything to say. A picture is worth a thousand words, right? There was simply no way I was going to miss a post if all I had to do was simply snap a picture and email it to my blog. As far as NaBloPoMo is concerned, it was sort of cheating, but it turned out to be a fun way to blog. The other source for the idea of CameraPhone365 is Project 365, another project where you post a photo to a blog every day for 365 days. The difference between CameraPhone365 and Project 365 is that in this project, you snap photos with your cameraphone. Can I do my own CameraPhone365 project?Heck, yeah. And I hope you do.What do I need for my own CameraPhone365 project? You need a mobile telephone that will take pictures and a blog. You will also need some way to get the pictures from your cameraphone to your blog. How you do that is up to you. I am emailing my photos to my flickr account, and using the flogr photoblog software on my website to display the photos. flogr does all the fetching of images for me so the only thing I need to do is email the photos from my phone to my flickr account. This, to me is the simplest way to do it.Another option for getting your photos from your camera to your blog using flickr is to set up a special flickr email address that will post images to your WordPress, Blogger, Typepad or other blog. You can get information on how to do that here. I used this method on my regular blog (here’s an example ) and I found that it worked very well. You don’t have to have a flickr account to do your project. There are other online photo services that can be used, and there’s nothing wrong with skipping the online photo-sharing sites altogether and using the brute force method of downloading the pictures from your phone to your own harddrive, then manually posting the pictures to your blog. Use whatever method works for you. If you need help, send me an email or ask your question in the comments of this post and I’ll do what I can to help.Do I have to post every single day?Yes and no. At the end of your project, you should have 365 posts, each containing a photo from your cameraphone. A different picture should be posted to your blog every single day. I think it would be unreasonable, though, to expect everyone to be able to do the actual posting every single day for a year. The one requirement, therefore, is to have a different picture posted every day. If you have the means to download your photos and manually post them to your blog every single day, more power to you. If it is easier for you to create multiple posts in a single sitting, then do that. Just remember to have one post for each day of the year by the end of your project. Can I post more than one picture per day?Sure.Do I have to use a cameraphone?Yes. Otherwise, this would just be another Project 365. The point of CameraPhone365 is to make it a little easier for non-photographers to start and finish the project. Being a photographer myself, I don’t think I’d be able to actually complete a Project 365 unless I could use a camera that I carry with me every minute of every day – that is, my cameraphone. Why should I do a CameraPhone365 project? It gives you a healthy, clear complexion. People will like you. It’s fun. It’s a great way to document your life. What else do I need to know?Nothing, really. But, I would like to know about you. If you plan on doing your own Project 365, tell me by emailing me at (Project 365 at mikemunhall.com). I want to know if you think this is a good idea and I’d like to see the progress on your blog. I’m toying with idea of creating a website for this project and letting people (like you) register and see the other participants. It could be its own huge mega CameraPhone365 industry one day. [...]

[...] January 4, 2008 by runyanthree Now don’t get me wrong–I love traveling to our families homes over the holidays. But there is nothing like unpacking all of your stuff and settling back into life in Chicago. Eleanor was happy to be back with her favorite companion, Charlie and we are planning to enjoy three more days of freedom before work resumes. We arrived last Saturday night in CT late–around midnight. Eleanor didn’t sleep a wink on the plane but wowed everyone with her smile, playfulness and the smell of her diaper. When we got to the airport after waiting about an hour we discovered they lost our carseat. So there Eleanor wowed everyone walking around ALL over the place and screaming whenever we tried to hold her. The airport gave us a borrowed car seat and returned ours the next day and Eleanor had her first taste of being a night owl. My brother arrived at the same time from MN (I called his boss to try to get him off so he could come home and my parents flew him home with frequent flyer miles). Working retails sucks during the holidays but he makes up for it with some good clothing deals. I enjoyed spending time near my parents fireplace in their festively decorated home. It was certainly peaceful. We headed to church on Christmas Eve. My mom played the organ at church and Eleanor thought she was terrific. She even clapped at the end. I had fun catching up with Julie and Daphne discussing pumping and returning to work. My mom and I did some shopping at some of the little places around Cheshire. We got Eleanor some books at the a little bookstore where a family friend works. When we were leaving she asked to take a picture of me because she was doing something called Project 365. I looked it up when I got home and decided I was going to do it. I really liked the idea of being able to look at my entire year and reflect on the major events as well as the little things that make life interesting. Anyone else interested? [...]

[...] One of more vague resolutions that crossed my mind is to take more photos in the coming year, and thus (hopefully) improve my picture-snapping skills. And to do that I’ve decided to try Project 365, which is all the rage over on Flickr. You have to take one photo for an entire year – 365 days (366 actually, since 2008 is a leap year!). There’s another group like this that does one self-portrait every day for a year, but I’m neither brave nor vain enough to attempt that :p I like the idea of a photo a day with the photo somehow reflecting your day – whether a small aspect of it or something major that you did during it. Makes you think about you’re doing more and on the photography-side it forces you to look at a wider range of subjects you may have overlooked, in ways you may haven’t thought of. Yes, it’s sort of like a visual journal or diary, but it isn’t necessarily as personal or detailed as an actual online journal or diary, but it’s far more interesting, in my humble opinion. I majored in Literature and consider myself an aspiring writer, but I find myself far more nostalgic and inspired by our old family photo albums than the six years of livejournaling that I did (oh how I don’t miss those days) or earlier non-digital diaries I actually kept. And I think I do need to focus on the more personal-side of photography instead of just more trees and skyscrapers Not to mention getting into the habit of taking a camera with me everywhere I go (which is what I got my small P&S Canon Powershot for) – and if this doesn’t get me into doing that I don’t know what will. Last but not least, it will give me a reason to blog regularly again, as I feel I have something to blog about again. [...]

Of course my fashionably late self signs up today. Which is weird because I wanted to do Project 365 and was actually amped for it – until the paranoia of carrying my Nikon D40 with me everywhere set in. From dropping it onto the train tracks, to being arrested for taking pictures that aren’t allowed in a public place due to “security concerns”, I just couldn’t force myself to bring it to work on the subway and then back home again. Not having a camera case was part of it too, but definitely not the main reason. I could use a point and shoot that I have lying around but that would defeat the purpose of actually using the D40 in order to learn everything about it. I’ve thought about cheating and taking and then posting a week’s worth of pictures, on the weekend – and will probably go that route. [...]

My goal is to have all my pictures for each week posted here, and I would like to do a layout for each, but we shall see about that. [...]

[...] I was working on my 365 Project this morning rather than waiting until 10:30pm or so as I’ve been doing the past day or two, and I hit on inspiration, lol. Ordinary Kitchen was completed today, and gave place to several of my random images that have been languishing in their folders with no purpose other than looking cool. I’m hoping to make one or two of the images into thank you cards for people who have been so sweet to us. [...]

[...] I have decided on one long term project for the year, which I announced to the Prince last night with those fateful words, “And I’m going to start tomorrow.” And that’s Project 365, a simple concept – take one photo every day. One photo of absolutely anything, every single day, no skipping, no making up by taking two photos the next day. Every day. (And then upload them onto Flickr.) [...]

[...] In an effort to improve my photography and reinvigorate my photoblog, I’ve decided to participate in Project 365 for 2008. The rules are pretty simple: post 1 photo every day for 365 days. Initially I was going to participate in a month long photo project but found the idea of committing to 365 days of photographs to be quite a bit more challenging. [...]

[...] I’ve decided I want to try and play the Project 365 game. That is where you post a picture a day for the entire year. I am also participating in Blog 365 where you blog every day of the year. You don’t have to post to your blog every day, you can journal, hand write, you can post pictures, whatever. Something I do anyway, so why not. But I have started another blog (I know, I’m insane, but for so many reasons…) for the Project 365. I am behind just a wee bit (like 3 weeks) but I hope to be all caught up soon. [...]

[...] I’m SOOO excited about this project!!! And now I can share it with all of you. Many of us are partaking in the 365 Project, the challenge to take one photo every day for an entire year. I began, but knew unless I had a plan for all these photos, I would never complete the challenge. As a result, these templates were born! And now in week 4, I’m thankful. Potty training is looming. Laundry is piling up, and I don’t have time to fuss. It’s hard enough to GET that shot each and every day, let alone fuss with it much. These templates have made it quick and easy, and such a joy to just be able to pop them in. [...]

[...] I’m delighted that Sam asked me to share one of our AAC projects. Josh and I showed a powerpoint presentation about Project 365 at the 2007 Closing the Gap. Project365 is something I heard about from my daughter last year. The premise is simple – take a picture every single day of the year. The idea came from Taylor McKnight at PhotoJoJo.com. I started to think about it, and how my son Josh and I could try it. We wanted Josh to practice writing, and he needs structure to do so. What if he wrote daily about the picture he took? First, he needed to learn the vocabulary of photography. From there, we created a light tech board. And then we were ready to go! He would take his picture, upload it to his blog and then use his talker to write a few descriptive sentences about what he saw or how the picture made him feel. Example: This is Josh dad red Shelley Grandma and mom This has been a wonderful experience for many reasons. Josh isn’t only getting the writing practice we hoped for, but is able to make connections to people through his blog. He is paying closer attention to the people and things around him. His responsibility for this daily task is increasing. He is learning and mastering technology popular and important to other people his own age (19 now). [...]

[...] I’ve decided to begin a 365 project. As I’ve just learned about this type of project I’m a little late in getting one started for 2008 but I figure better late than not begin one at all. In looking through my catalog of images from 2007 I decided that I am not shooting enough. There’s the old adage, “it’s not quantity, but quality.” While I believe this to be true it is also true that one does not improve their craft without practice. So I’ve made a comittment to myself to shoot at least one image per day and I’ve created this blog to document and catalog these images. While I may not post an image a day I will shoot one and post all images shot.We begin…”My Little Warrior”Notes:Shot with small softbox camera left430ex at 1/16 power85mm @ f1.8 [...]
